Scholarships at Western University

Western is committed to support five Afghan student refugees who are applying to a full time undergraduate or graduate program at Western’s main campus with scholarships continuing for up to four years. 

Eligibility

• Entered Canada as a refugee from Afghanistan up to 1 year prior to the intended study period start date.

• Apply for and receive admission to a full-time undergraduate or graduate program at Western’s main campus. Note that you can apply for the scholarship prior to receiving an offer of admission.

Cost covered

Western will cover the cost of tuition, fees, and living expenses for five students with value varying up to a maximum of $25,000 per year.

Schulich Scholarships are awarded to students entering first year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program and Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) program based on academic achievement and demonstrated financial need. These scholarships will continue for up to four years provided that recipients progress satisfactorily and continue to demonstrate financial need each year.

These scholarships were established by Seymour Schulich to help ensure that students who want to enter Western's Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) programs receive the financial assistance they need.

Medical Scholarships

Value

• Total Value of $112,000.

• Payable $28,000 per academic year continuing, provided that recipients progress satisfactorily and continue to demonstrate financial need each year. Recipients will receive renewal information each spring/summer.

• Number of scholarships vary each year.

Dentistry Scholarships

Value

• Total value of $44,800.

• Payable $11,200 per academic year for a period of four years, provided that recipients progress satisfactorily and continue to demonstrate financial need each year. Recipients will receive renewal information each spring/summer.

• 4 scholarships available.

• Student must meet Ontario residency requirements.

The National Indigenous Scholarship Program is awarded annually to five incoming Indigenous undergraduate students (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) studying full-time at Western’s main campus based on their outstanding academic excellence. The National Indigenous Scholarship also recognizes the candidate’s academic achievements, creative and innovative thinking, and previous or intended contributions to Indigenous communities (on and off reserve as well as urban settings).

Scholarship Values

3 awards at $50,000 each to Indigenous students applying from Canadian high schools ($20,000 for year-one, $10,000 for year’s two to four based on ongoing registration)

2 awards at $50,000 each to Indigenous students applying from a postsecondary institution ($20,000 for year-one, $10,000 for year’s two to four based on ongoing registration)

Eligibility

Awarded annually to five Indigenous undergraduate students (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) studying full-time at Western's main campus based on their outstanding academic excellence and meaningful and impactful contribution toward Indigenous communities. Three scholarships will be awarded to students applying from Canadian high schools, and two scholarships to Indigenous students applying from a postsecondary institution. Recipients must meet the minimum academic averages for their programs, and will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, creative and innovative thinking, and previous or intended contributions to Indigenous communities (including, on and off reserve and as well as urban settings).

Reference

In order to be considered for the National Indigenous Scholarship program, a reference is required.

Western has committed $600,000 in financial support to students and scholars facing disruption and displacement due to conflict or war in their home countries.  

Are you a new international student applying for admissions to an undergraduate program at the Western main campus who is in need of assistance and whose home country has been devastated by wars and other disasters? You may be eligible for one of the scholarships for globally displaced students at Western. 

Western offers six scholarships at $25,000 each year continuing for up to 4 years. 

Eligibility and Other Infomation

• For scholarship consideration, you must have received an admission offer to an undergraduate program at Western’s main campus, and intend to register as full time student.

• The scholarship will continue for up to four years provided you remain registered full time (minimum 3.5 crs) in an undergraduate program at Western’s main campus.

The Western International Admission Scholarships are awarded to students with an exceptional academic record who has the potential to make outstanding contributions both in the classroom and beyond.

The Western International Admission Scholarship is a four-year award. Students selected for these scholarships will receive $10,000 CAD in the first year and the funds will be directly applied against the tuition bill. An additional $5,000 CAD will be applied against the tuition bill annually in the second, third, and fourth years of study.

To recognize and reward the outstanding academic achievements of our incoming high school students, Western offers the following admission scholarships:

Notes:

1) Scholarship offerings are effective from 2020-2021 onwards.

2) Students in receipt of a National Scholarship or a Schulich Leader Scholarship are not eligible for an admission scholarship.

3) If you are applying for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) please do not report scholarships from Western on your OSAP application - our office will report them to OSAP on your behalf. Please note that you are still responsible for reporting any external funding received (ie. not awarded by Western ) on your OSAP application.

4) The Don Wright Faculty of Music will select the Western Scholarship of Excellence recipients for applicants to a music program.

5) Recipients of the Western Scholarship of Excellence may also receive a $2,000 Travel Grant if they are from a high school from an International or Out of Province location.

If you are admitted to an undergraduate program at Western’s main campus directly from secondary school and are registered in first-year full-time studies you will be automatically considered for one of these admission scholarships; you do not need to submit an application. These scholarships are available to domestic and international students.

Important Conditions and Information

• You must meet the admission conditions as specified in your offer package.

• You must be applying for admission directly from secondary school to be eligible for an Admission Scholarship. Generally, students who have attended a post-secondary institution, or students who attended a post-secondary institution and then returned to secondary school, are not eligible.

• Generally home-schooled applicants are not eligible for consideration for admission scholarships.

• You must be registered for full-time studies (minimum 3.5 courses) at main campus to be eligible. If you enrol in a part-time course load, reduce your enrolment to part-time or withdraw from the academic year, you will not be eligible to keep your admission scholarship.

• Admission averages are NOT rounded to the nearest whole percentage for admission scholarship consideration. 

• Western will determine averages for applicants who are not studying in a Canadian secondary school curriculum based on curriculum, grading practices, and grading scale interpretation.

• Optional Study Abroad funding:

  • If you do not pursue a study abroad experience, the study abroad portion of the scholarship funding is forfeited.

  • Eligible students can receive an International Learning Award in addition to the optional study abroad funding offered as part of the Admission Scholarship funding.

  • The funding will be given in a single payment - it cannot be split into multiple payments toward different experiences.

  • To receive the study abroad funding:

    • You must participate in an eligible international experience that is approved by Western International, and the experience must be completed prior to the end of your fourth year of studies.

    • You must be registered at Western in the academic year you request the funding.

    • To claim the study abroad funding you must submit an International Experience Awards Application available through the Western International - International Learning website to notify our office of your travel plans.

• Admission Scholarships cannot be deferred.

Our admission scholarship program for Black and Indigenous students offers scholarships continuing for up to four years to recognize outstanding secondary school students entering the first year of any undergraduate program at Western University directly from high school. 

Western offers the following admission scholarships: 

Notes: 

• Admission scholarships for Black students are based on the top admission average and are available to domestic and international students.

• Admission scholarships for indigenous students are based on overall academic performance.

• These scholarships cannot be combined with National Scholarship or Schulich Leader Scholarship.

• Students who have attended a post-secondary institution, or students who attended a post-secondary institution and then returned to secondary school, are not eligible

• If you are applying for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) please do not report scholarships from Western on your OSAP application - our office will report them to OSAP on your behalf.
