Record number of international students studying in Canada

Published 18 February 2023

New data revealed by the Canadian government has revealed that Canada hosted over 800,000 international students in 2022 – an increase of almost a third in one year.

In December, there was a total of 807,750 study permit holders in Canada, which Canadian immigration described as a “record-breaking year” for visa applications. This is an increase of over 190,000 from 2021 and surpasses Canada’s target of 450,000 overseas students by 2022 set out in the country’s 2014 international education strategy.

In total, there were 319,130 Indian study permit holders in Canada, followed by 100,075 from China, 32,455 from the Philippines and 27,135 from France.

Larissa Bezo, president and CEO of the Canadian Bureau for International Education, said: “The international education community remains committed to ensuring a high quality and supportive learning experience for our students in order to allow them to achieve their personal, academic and professional goals.”
