After completing his primary education he left his homeland for Great Britain, where he completed his secondary education. He then went to the U.S. for advanced studies. Just prior to the Islamic Revolution, he returned to Iran, having received a Master’s of Arts in Law & Diplomacy from Tufts University's Fletcher School. A series of events, including his father’s death and the advent of the Islamic Republic in Iran changed the course of Mr. Bader’s career. Thereafter, his time was devoted to running a private inherited business. In the early 1990s, Mr. Bader had the opportunity to gain permanent resident status in Canada. Some years later, he became a Canadian citizen. With no immediate family, Mr. Bader decided to will much of his Canadian assets to Dalhousie University to create the Abdul Majid Bader Graduate Scholarship fund for international doctoral or master’s students. On learning of the high tuition costs for these students, Mr. Bader decided the scholarship should be directed to international students, with a first preference for Iranian students who are residents of Iran. In this manner, Mr. Bader hoped to give back to his homeland and his adopted country of Canada, which, he says, has been most generous to people like him. The scholarship is valued at $40,000 for one 12-month academic year of full-time study. The scholarship is renewable, subject to an annual progress review. The award can be held for a maximum of 24 months of full-time study. Fees are not waived and must be paid out of the award. Eligibility criteria Applicants from Iran will be given first preference for the award, with international students being considered if there are no Iranian candidates. Students with first-class academic standing (>3.7/4.3) in their last two years of academic study may apply. Preference is given to students who have not yet started their degree or are in the first year of their PhD program at the time of application. Students enrolled in a master’s program at the time of application are not eligible to apply. Students who have applied to master’s programs are eligible to apply. Students who are enrolled in or have applied to doctoral programs are eligible to apply.

Candidates are selected from the Harmonized Scholarship Process based on departmental support and the results of the university-level review process. Master's students may hold a Level 1 Killam Scholarship for up to 24 months (but not past the end of the second year of your program). If you are receiving other FGS-Managed awards (Tri-agency doctoral, NSGS, Scotia Scholar, MSSU, etc.), they will be subject to FGS funding stacking rules, resulting in the Killam or other awards being designated as honorary for some or all of the award duration. The $42,000/year (or $14,000/term) value of this award includes all forms of FGS-managed support such Tri-Agency awards, provincial scholarships, etc. Funding received from non-FGS managed sources such as departmental awards, faculty research grants and department allocations will not impact the value of Killam funding received. Relocation allowance New Killam scholars relocating to Nova Scotia to start their graduate program will be assisted with the cost of travel. Reimbursement of expenses, not to exceed the lowest cost airfare available by the most direct route, will be made for you upon completion of travel and submission of a travel expense claim form with all original receipts and boarding passes (if applicable). Expenses must be submitted for reimbursement no later than the end of your first term at Dalhousie. Unfortunately, no reimbursements are provided for the transportation of family members or personal effects. Non-paid interruption of award Non-paid interruptions of awards for up to 12 months will be permitted for an approved leave of absence from the graduate program for which funding was received. A student may not interrupt an award in order to take up another award or to pursue studies other than those for which a student has received funding. Paid parental leave Effective May 1, 2021, pre-doctoral Killam scholars (Master's and Doctoral) can apply for paid parental leave benefits. These benefits are intended to support those students who do not have access to other paid parental leave supports through tri-agency research or scholarship funding. A Killam Pre-doctoral scholarship may be interrupted for a period of up to 12 months for parental leave. The benefit received includes a stipend of up to $1250/month for up to 12 months. The stipend amount will be reduced by funding received from other sources (e.g. tri-agency scholarship or research grant parental leave benefits, or other funding sources). Interruptions for this purpose must be taken within six months following the birth or adoption of the child. Under the joint supervision of a home and host professor, successful senior undergraduate students, graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows will receive a $6,000 research award to conduct a 12- to 24-week research project in the other country. Awards are offered in partnership with Mitacs’s Canadian academic partners (and, in some cases, with Mitacs’s international partners) and are subject to available funding. Eligibility criteria You must be registered as a full-time graduate student or postdoctoral fellow at an eligible Canadian institution or eligible international institution and remain as such throughout your Globalink Research Award. As a postdoctoral fellow, you may apply if your date of graduation from a PhD program is no more than five years prior to the proposed start date of the research project and you have postdoctoral status at an eligible institution. You cannot undertake a research project at an institution where you have previously completed a degree or in a country where you hold citizenship. The objectives of this award are to attract and retain top-quality research graduates, as well as to encourage exploration, discovery, and innovation in research priority areas for Nova Scotia. As a result, eligibility requires that you have not started your intended program of study prior to December 31 of the year of the competition, and the intended research must align with one or more research area priorities. PhD students may hold NSGS Doctoral funding for up to 48 months, but not past the end of their fourth year in program. The time in program for the purpose of funding eligibility for students transferring from a master’s to a PhD is determined based on the effective transfer date. Up to 166 scholarships will be awarded annually. You are strongly encouraged to speak with your proposed or current supervisor and graduate coordinator to indicate you are planning to apply for this award. Deadlines: October 31 at 4 p.m. ADT Value: Two scholarships for $2,500 each per year for up to two years Scholarship type: Entrance or first-year in-program Degree level: All master's or doctoral Available to: Iranian women or equity-deserving gender identify Description During the Fall of 2022, nationwide protests began in Iran following the tragic death of Mahsa Jina Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died while being detained by Iran's "morality police" for not covering her hair properly. Her senseless death, and those of many other women and children who peacefully and bravely protested the violations of their basic human rights, has sparked the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. This movement is routed in the desire for, and commitment to, equality, safety, and choice for women and children in Iran. In solidarity with this movement, Dr. Hamed Aghakhani, members of the Iranian Canadian community, and other equity-seeking groups are working to establish the Woman, Life, Freedom Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to support this movement in Iran. Eligible recipients include Iranian women and other Iranian equity-deserving gender identities entering or currently enrolled in a graduate program at Dalhousie University. Women make up approximately 60% of university graduates in Iran but constitute only 15% of the workforce. This is just one example of inequity and injustice toward women in Iran, which induces our responsibility to fight against it. By welcoming students to continue their studies here in Halifax, Canada, we can support these women and persons of equity-deserving gender identities by offering them a safe place to advance their education and pursue their goals. In doing so, we can work towards closing this unfair gender gap. This scholarship recognizes the importance of the Women, Life, Freedom movement and the frontline work being done by women and persons of equity-deserving gender identities in Iran. Our hope is that it will be the first of many movements to support Iranian women and/or persons of equity-deserving gender identities coming to Canada to pursue graduate programs. Eligibility Criteria: The recipient is from Iran. Self-identifies as a woman &/or another equity-deserving gender identity. Entrance or In-Program First Year Masters or PhD at Dalhousie. Strong achievements and leadership both within and outside of academic studies.
