Two Canadian universities rank in global top 5 for sustainability

Published 27 October 2022

The University of Toronto and University of British Columbia have been named two of the most sustainable universities in the world following the publication of the 2023 QS World University Rankings for Sustainability.

Toronto placed second globally and the best in Canada, while British Columbia followed closely behind in third.

John Robinson, a professor in the School of the Environment and Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at Toronto said: “Two of our flagship sustainability initiatives – committing to become climate-positive in our operations on the St George campus by 2050 and making sustainability curricular and co-curricular opportunities available to all undergraduate students – reflect this commitment and are part of a suite of activities across our three campuses."

Dr. Gail Murphy, vice-president, research and innovation at British Columbia, said: “UBC researchers bring interdisciplinary perspectives and partner with industry, government, communities and non-profit organisations to advance research to benefit society. We are continually looking to find ways to support these collaborations most effectively in order to tackle social issues globally and locally.”
