Published 30 January 2023

Douglas College has launched Canada’s First Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management.

The BSc-HIM degree will train the students according to the industry demands, rapidly expanding with various career options unfolding. Due to an exponential rise in the availability of health data, it has become imperative to train people who can manage that data efficiently so patients can get informed care. By opting for this study program, students will become experts in health policy, information governance, data analytics and more.

The program is to offer three major career pathways, including health analytics, governance and information intelligence, operational leadership, and management.

Dr Patricia Visosky, program coordinator and Vice Chair of the Canadian Health Information Management Association, said: "This degree responds to the trends we're seeing in the Canadian and international health landscape.

"Health information is a topic that has dominated the news and social media for years, with story after story coming out on data accuracy, collection, privacy and usage. Now that public interest in health data has been renewed, the demand for specialists in health information management and governance has risen accordingly."
